Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change: Insights from the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion

In this online dialogue, taking place on February 20, we will explore the Advisory Opinion (AO) of the International Court of Justice on States’ Obligations Regarding Climate Change. We will examine the legal duties of States, under international law, to prevent and address the impacts of climate change.

The discussion will be held with two distinguished professors and leading experts in International Law and Climate Change: Prof. Teresa Fajardo (Universidad de Granada) and Prof. Mar Campins (Universitat de Barcelona), providing a unique opportunity to analyze the Court’s opinion in depth. We will focus on how the AO responds to the questions posed by the UN General Assembly, highlighting the principles of climate justice, human rights protection, and the responsibilities of States toward vulnerable populations.

Participants will gain insights into the implications of the AO for international law, global climate action, and the evolving role of judicial guidance in promoting environmental accountability.
